Taylor Steele has some real gems under his belt. The Drive-Thru series has been a hit with both audiences and critics alike as has the comical Loose Change. Taylor Steele may be the best out there when it comes to theming his films with story-lines and even plots. The title of the films leave nothing to the imagination and execution of that moniker is usually done without a hitch. Steele's latest release Campaign is quite possibly the best executed film title he has released. "Surfing Sells" is the tagline of this surf flick and throughout the film we're reminded how surfing sells in corny yet funny 30-second skits by the surfers.
The 30-second commercials are hilarious. Taj Burrow plugging a dating service, Donavon hocking his breakfast cereal, Kelly Slater and Shane Dorian acting school, the list goes on. In between segments you get these mock commercials which are a nice break from the surfing and reaffirm that these surfers should stick to their day jobs.
The surfing in Campaign is killer. There are some wonderful locations you're not used to seeing and a smattering of surfers, both mainstream and lesser-known, that all combine to make captivating and jaw dropping surfing. So many surf flicks are the same old same old stuff and don't offer much in the way of new surfers and surfing but Campaign delivers both great surfing and surfers.
I don't know why but I wandered a bit at times watching Campaign and it got a bit corny with a couple of the mock commercials. I applaud Taylor Steele for coming up with new ideas and implementing them in his films so it's tough to knock him for the occasional corny segment since the surfing is solid.
The soundtrack is cool because you can choose from one of 5 different music types to suit your mood from funk to rock. It's a nice touch for those of us that get a little sick of the same old alternative/punk that seems to be the norm on many other surf films.
The extra features and bonus materials on the 2nd disk make up for any short-comings in the feature film.
If you're looking for solid surfing with a little comedy thrown in Campaign is tough to beat. This will probably be one of Taylor's bigger recent films.
